It finally happened! I have been wanting to do something to this big beige wall in my front living room for years...years!

See, the only problem is that I didn't know how anything would look with that planked/shiplap wall next to it. I thought about continuing the planking onto this wall and the other walls in here, but it's not my fave way of doing the planking. So, if that was going to happen, I would just take it all down and do it with tongue and groove boards. This would be super crazy expensive. I've been wanting to do floor to ceiling board and batten somewhere in my house for years. The places I really want it have 20 foot high ceilings, so that wasn't going to happen. The other rooms are already done with something else that I'm not ready to part with. I always envisioned it on this wall...and well, now that my weekends are a little more free I decided to finally tackle it and just see how it looks!

I ordered all the items I needed online from Home Depot and did curbside pickup. I sent my husband since he's already out and about considering he's an essential employee. It worked out really well! I don't know how much longer these stay-at-home orders will be in place, but if they continue on and your in a state that allows things like this...there's your option!

So, I'm not going to lie...this took quite some time to do...mainly the finishing work to make it look just perfect. But it was totally worth it. Here's the after!
DIY floor to ceiling board and batten tutorial. Board and batten in living room. Board and batten and shiplap together. How to do board and batten. Modern farmhouse living room decor and decorating ideas. White cottage farm decor.
I have a lots of tutorials on how to do board and batten, here's my favorite one (plus it includes most of the other tutorials). It shows you how I like to finish them so you have a nice clean look and no gaps. Gaps are usually a big issue with making them be so-so to looking amazing. I realized once all my boards were up, mainly the horizontal ones, how unlevel my ceiling and walls were! It's crazy. Here are a few pics of my process.

First step was to paint the wall white. I used Behr's Swiss Coffee in satin -my favorite white!

DIY floor to ceiling board and batten tutorial. Board and batten in living room. Board and batten and shiplap together. How to do board and batten. Modern farmhouse living room decor and decorating ideas. White cottage farm decor.
I then used 1/2"x3 1/2" boards on the ceiling line. I secured these in, along with all the other boards, using 2" brad nails and my nail gun. Finding the studs in the wall are a good idea to make sure they are in good.
DIY floor to ceiling board and batten tutorial. Board and batten in living room. Board and batten and shiplap together. How to do board and batten. Modern farmhouse living room decor and decorating ideas. White cottage farm decor.
Since my baseboards have a pretty decorative edge, it was too small to have the 1/2" width sit on them and look pretty. So, I just added a 1/2" x 2 1/2" board on top of my baseboard. Secured it in.
DIY floor to ceiling board and batten tutorial. Board and batten in living room. Board and batten and shiplap together. How to do board and batten. Modern farmhouse living room decor and decorating ideas. White cottage farm decor.
From there I added the vertical boards. They are 1/2" x 1 1/2" boards spaced 14" apart. Word of advice, measure before you cut every board. My wall height varied by about 1/4" to 1/2" from one end to the other. So, don't do a mass cut, do it board by board.
DIY floor to ceiling board and batten tutorial. Board and batten in living room. Board and batten and shiplap together. How to do board and batten. Modern farmhouse living room decor and decorating ideas. White cottage farm decor.
I then used some light weight spackling compound and went over every crevice with my fingers, and then used a lightly damp paper towel to clean up the excess. I then painted over the boards and the wall one more time for a pretty crisp clean look.

It's up to you if you want to put these boards into studs. I know a lot of people do, and suggest if you don't, to use liquid nails. Liquid nails ruin walls if you ever want to take the boards off. So, I decide not to use it. And I don't always go in studs. I have so much board and batten in my house and have never lined them up purposely with studs, and none have come down....even with the few earthquakes we have been having over the years. I think it's helpful that I used the spackling compound, it kind of like secures it a little more.

Another thing that took me forever to do, was paint that darn ceiling. It took me about 2 nights to do it. I couldn't leave it though, then I would have white walls with a beige ceiling and that just looked weird :)

I am so pleased with how this turned out. This is the view from our entryway coming into the house. I feel like it's just so much brighter and has a lot more character.

This is a good look at how the board and batten looks against the planking or shiplap wall. I actually don't mind it!

And of course, I had to paint this other wall and added the board and batten to it. This was the wall I was dreading. It was actually one of my favorite walls in my whole house before. But, I knew I couldn't leave it beige and have two other walls looking completely different too. It seriously hurt me to do this. ha! But it has grown on me and I'm coming to love it.

Here's what it looked like before:

Now this was just way to white for me (never thought I would say that)! But, my favorite part about having things white is how wood and color pop off of it so good! So, I added this beautiful wood piece on the top of my door from DecorSteals. I thought it helped break up the white. I'll be redoing the curtain rod and brackets soon to add a little more wood, and possibly change out the curtains.

Back when this wall was beige, I would attempt to take this picture and it would turn out awful. The coloring was just never right. Now, it's perfect!

I have some ideas in store to switch up some of my cabinets. I'm thinking this one might get switched with the apothecary one in my living room. We will see! It'll help add a little more color to this room now that it's all white.

This is an angle that you don't get to see ...often...if ever. It's just not picturesque :) but, I figured I should snap a picture while it's actually clean! This is the cabinet that my hoard of pillows, accent rugs, and blankets go in...and usually around and on top of :)

My husband says now I have my own white box. It's so true. ha! The lighting in here is so amazing. It's the best place to hang out! I have moved my office in here...that means I just plop in here with my laptop :) I do have a cute little cafe table that is easy to move in and out that works perfect for a makeshift desk! Plus, when it's nice out and those doors are open...it's just magical.

My next project is going to be my bathroom. I am finally biting the bullet and going to paint those cabinets. Ah! I might even change out the tile. We shall see! Are you working on anything fun to pass the time? I'm excited to get some of these projects done, it feels like I didn't do much last year, and I want to make a stamp on this year :)

I have a number of things that I have a decorating obsession with. This thing can be found in almost every single room in my house. No, it's not candlesticks, although that is another obsession. It's corbels. I have a serious thing for corbels. They used to be so hard to find, but smaller prefab ones are more common now. But still, those nice big old ones are sooo expensive and hard to find. I usually fill the spaces I need with smaller ones I find from small boutique stores. I have salvaged one before which gave inspiration to the piece I'm going to show you how to make today.

Here's the salvaged piece I have that I love, and subsequently figured out how easy it is to make. I'm going to show you how to make one that's about 11 inches high by 8 inches wide. The size of a sheet of paper.

First step was to draw a rough sketch of what I wanted the shape to be like. You can use this as a guide for free. Just use your printer to print it the desired size you want. Then cut it out, smooth out the curves with your scissors :)

I found some scrap wood that fit the cut out and traced it with a pencil.

I then used my jigsaw and cut it out.

Cut out two of the scrolling pieces, and then one that just as the outline with a straight bottom and left side.

Line up and glue the pieces together. I also secured it with some brad nails.

One of mine was cut a little bit off, but I made it work the best I could. Since this was meant to resemble something old and rustic, I didn't really care if it was perfect.

At this point, I decided to sand the edges. To get in the tight spots, I used just a piece of sandpaper instead of a block or sander.

Next, I added the back with a scrap piece of 1x4 about one inch taller than the scrolling piece. Make it flush on the bottom. You can glue this, or secure it with some brad nails. I used both.

I toyed with the idea of doing the bottom piece, but decided to leave it open like my inspiration piece. That one only had one edge. You can add one or not!

To get the look I have, I stained it first with Dark Walnut.

I then went over the edges with some petroleum jelly. I also added some in the middle of the piece. I just put it everywhere I wanted the stain to show through in the next steps.

I then painted the whole thing white. I just used a basic latex paint. I did two coats.

Once the paint was dried, I used a sanding block to go over the edges. The paint should come off pretty easily; if it doesn't and you know there's some jelly on there, sand a little harder.

This piece took about 2 hours to do, probably could do it faster if I tried, but I took my time. I think it turned out great for a first try! I'm totally going to be buying a scroll saw this week, so I'm excited to try some more designs and sizes. But this is something you can easily make with a basic jigsaw.

I am loving going through my scrap pile and finding fun things to make out of it. The cheapest I found with a corbel this size was about $20, and that's just prefabricated and not real wood. This was completely free and pretty substantial. Can't beat that!

Don't have a jigsaw? This is one of my favorite tools in my tool box! It's actually the first "power tool" I ever owned. You can buy one from the comfort of your home (you know, because that matters now!) for under $30!

I'm going to get real here for a minute, and I know I can't be the only one. Every time I get on social media or talk to someone it seems like they are bored to tears with this social distancing and quarantining thing with nothing to do. Or, now they finally have all the time in the world to get things done. I wish this were me! This quarantining thing has flipped my world on it's end and I'm just scrambling to get back afloat. I'm seriously drowning over here! ha! I'm the busiest I have ever been. Every free minute I have away from my normal work is now sucked up with homeschooling. This whole thing is completely new to me and I applaud all of you guys that have it figured out or figured it out long ago! This momma is not meant to be a teacher...I knew that the summer my oldest turned 3 when I tried to start teaching her from those preschool books you can buy at the store. My patience lasted about 5 minutes. This has given me so much more appreciation for teachers! If you are one of them, thank you thank you thank you! :)  Until then...I had all these hopes of "quarantine" projects happening. Let's just say I'm not sure they are going to happen ;) I'm going to see how this weekend goes and see if I can find some spare time to whip something up! I have ideas running through my head like crazy, just no time to do them. One of those ideas is something big in my front living room.

Yep. My plan is to paint the beige walls and ceiling white, and then add board and batten from floor to ceiling. I'm going to keep the planking/shiplap on the back wall and see how that ends up looking. I'm thinking it'll be okay, but you never know until you try!

On that back shiplapped wall is my faux fireplace and mantel. I got this mantel for a steal on the local classifieds a little over a year ago. It has been my top fave find of all time. I love the character it brings to the space. I decorated it with some books and corbels. I added a little spring green to it with garland I found at Hobby Lobby. The center is a clock I found from Home Goods. As for the wall, isn't that wreath beautiful? It's the new spring wreath from DecorSteals.

A lot of people think that having a neutral house means having no color. I disagree completely. Having a neutral house helps the color you add pop even more. It's purposeful color. I love using greens in my decor year around because of how it pops. Plus, I guess if we are being honest, green is pretty much a neutral anyway. It goes with everything! Also, having that neutral and white backdrop helps bring attention to the wood tones in a space. If this beautiful mantel was against a red wall, it would get completely lost. But, against a white wall, it becomes the focal point and you can see all the fine details.

For tighter spaces like in this room, I like using skinnier pieces like this bench for the coffee table. Plus, it's multipurpose and offers tons of storage. For us, it houses a whole bunch of play kitchen items for my kids.

On top of the bench, I have my dough bowl I also got from DecorSteals. This thing is beautiful and massive. I went simple with it this spring, and added some sprigs of lavender in an old galvanized bucket then flanked the sides with greenery. These stems on the sides are actually from the faux potted plants from Ikea; I just took off the base. They work perfect like that! I added some little wicker balls next to them to fill in some space.

On the table by the couch, I tied the space together with some more lavender, and this beautiful flowing vine plant (what else would you call that? ha!). If you have followed me for awhile, you may have guessed where these two are from. Ikea. Seriously. They have the best faux plants! To complete this vignette, I added candlesticks and some books along with a white beaded garland.

While taking these photos, I ended up having both of my pets come in here. I love watching this pup watching outside. He literally stays there all day on the look out for those pesky delivery drivers...which let's be honest, happens like 2-3 times a day :)

Our new little bunny, Oreo, was actually in here in the whole time I was shooting these photos. I'm actually pretty surprised his little butt didn't end up in any of the shots. He's been a super fun addition to our family....especially now for my littles since they are home all day. They get one little extra 'friend' to play with.

This room has been my sanctuary this past week. It's usually the last place to get trashed, but I make it the first place to get cleaned up too. I've started working in here to get away from the chaos that is life :) I'm hoping to show you a new and improved room in the coming weeks with the board and batten up on the adjacent walls. What do you think? Think it'll look okay with the shiplap? I might just end up doing the whole room in board and batten if it doesn't. Eeeek! Kind of nervous, kind of excited.

How are you all doing with this quarantine? They are a few days away from shutting down our whole city. Doesn't matter too much to me at this point anyway since I haven't been anywhere for about 2 weeks trying to keep the social distancing in check. Having two autoimmune diseases kind of makes me freak out just a little bit. I'm not sure how my body will handle it if I do get sick. Better be safe than sorry! Keep safe and healthy you guys!
