Welcome to your time of retreat! I don't know about you all, but at day 2 of social distancing with school out on dismissal and everyone working from home, my anxiety has hit the roof! ha! Keeping my home clean has sadly been way hard with my little tornadoes going through it. I am super thankful though that I have a full time job that I'm able to do from home to help during this chaotic time, along with my outlet here. That being said, for many of us, this is going to be a time of creativity! Trying to be creative in all ways of life, either with finances, food, keeping children busy, and helping you survive by tuning into your creative outlet! I hope that this post, along with the other tours this week, will bring you inspiration and ideas to keep your mind busy and your creativity flowing!

Proof of my chaos:
Yep. That picture was taken about 10 minutes after I finished taking these pictures for this tour :) At least they are having fun!

Let's get back to this other reality that only lasts one minute :) ....Today, I'm sharing my spring living room tour along with many other talented bloggers tours going on this week! These tours are hosted by the amazing Marty from A Stroll Thru Life. If you are joining along the tour hop, welcome from Modern Glam. Isn't Ashley's home just so beautiful and inviting? If you want some serious inspiration, her home has it!

As for my living room, here's one of the first views you get when walking in. I love using whites and neutrals against different types of wood. As you can tell, I'm all about mixing wood. At one time, black didn't match with brown and brass didn't match with nickle. But now they do! I seriously think, that's all in the past and it's okay to get creative with those things now! Same with wood :)

I try to keep this room light and airy so the wood tones pop. Plus, a bright light home for me just calms me and lifts my spirit. I added pops of greenery throughout this space to mark the beginnings of spring.

My builtin shelves stay the same the majority of the year, but I do change out the faux greens in the pots. For spring, I used lavender I found at Ikea.

The shelves on the other side house a plethora of firewood. I love the character this brings to the space. I have actually got a lot of concerns and questions about having this amount of wood in my house...mainly about bugs. I haven't seen any bugs come from these. I was super worried about it also when I was putting them up. I actually left the majority of the wood unbundled in my basement for a good week or two before bringing them upstairs. If there was a crazy looking piece that looked like something was living in it, I tossed it. All of that being said, I think it's about time to switch these logs to books! I just have to find enough books to fill this thing up :) I guess I'll be having a massive bonfire when that time comes!

The centerpiece to my spring mantel is this amazing repurposed wood world map from DecorSteals. This thing is big and sure makes a statement! I then added vintage-y little items to fill up the mantel shelf. In the middle, I have vintage books held together by some corbels also from DecorSteals. I then flanked that with these beautiful vintage looking terracotta pots I found at Michaels. I swagged a macrame tassel piece along the birch wood to give it a little boho vibe. I finished it up with some swagged greenery.

As for my coffee table and couch, I kept it neutral. Ever since I bought this rug, I've been adding color so I couldn't wait to go back to my roots and just do whites and creams with the pillows.
I moved this cabinet behind the couch last year, and it's one of the best decisions I have made in a while....mainly because it has given me another place to decorate :) And of course, it offers loads of toy storage. Yep, my kids play area is all behind this couch and you wouldn't even notice!

This apothecary cabinet is still one of my favorite finds. I use it somewhat as a side table for the couch. The couch's arm is actually really high so a normal sized side table is too small. This cabinet offers a ton of character and storage too! It was a Hobby Lobby find I repainted.
I have a few things that go on most of my tabletops in my house which are faux greenery, books, clocks, and candlesticks. I feel like you can never really go wrong with that mixture. I have learned the past year that swagging garland adds that extra layer that sometimes completes an area!

Here are a couple wider views of this space. I have a feeling it won't be looking like this for many many days to come!

Isn't the time between Christmas and Spring such a weird time for decorating? Like, how exactly are you supposed to decorate for the months of January and February? All your Christmas is down, and your house is looking oh so bare, but it just waaaaay to early to introduce spring florals. Over the past few years, I have honed in on what exactly January and February decor should look like. It took some time to get used to it, but when you think about it, it totally makes sense. Decorate inside with what you see outside. I won't be seeing any flowers soon, but I do see beautiful trees and bushes covered in a perfect dusting of snow. And because January and February are usually so dreary weather-wise, and shorter days, it's good to bring in bright neutral colors! Don't live in a dark cave those dark winter months :)

I usually take down my Christmas stuff at the beginning of January. I learned this year that the 12 days of Christmas are actually AFTER Christmas, and not before. I may have been hiding underneath a rock, but I didn't know this. So, it's actually old tradition to not take your tree down until the 6th of January. So, this is helpful to all of us who wonder when exactly should you take down Christmas. Of course, to each their own :) but there's a good guideline!

So, to start taking down my Christmas in attempt to leave up Winter, I try to take all what I think as Christmas-y down...like obvious Christmas stuff. Things that say "Jolly", "Santa", "Noel", ect. I then remove all the red, glitz and glitter. The stockings and the ornaments from the trees are gone. Christmas countdowns are put away. I'm usually left with a pretty neutral scheme along with greens. Some greens are flocked, and some aren't. This is what Winter is to me.

Last year, I kept up my big trees through most of January and into February. I felt like this was too long. Sometimes the magic of Christmas is because it's so fleeting and only lasts just for a little while. Even though all the "Christmas" was gone, the big trees reminded me too much of it. So, this year, I took down my big trees and only left the little ones.

Along with smaller trees, I kept up a lot of garland. The garland I chose doesn't have any red berries or too much sparkle. I chose the ones that seemed the most natural. Ones that looked like they could totally belong outside.

I also went completely neutral in most of my rooms, letting the greens of the trees and garland pop.

Along with every other time of year, textures are so important. It's a good way to bring interest to the neutral color scheme...or interest to any color scheme at all. Bring in textures through organic materials like wood and pine cones. The garland and trees bring in texture all on their own. Add texture through throw blankets and pillows.

And of course, layers are sooo important during the cold winter months. Layers help bring in comfort especially with the bareness you feel when all the Christmas stuff is gone. I add layers through simple things like window treatments, rugs, pillows, and blankets.

Layers can also be just adding more to things like garland in between these candlesticks, plus the runner.

Adding trays onto benches, beds, or coffee tables also add that extra little comfort. I like to fill my trays with books, greenery, and little extras.

It used to be that keeping even small little trees out after December was so weird to me. But as I said before, when you think about it, it makes sense to leave them out! I like to think that nature dictates how you should decorate (for the most part....at least those of us who have 4 hard seasons). Flowers in Spring. Pumpkins and fall colors during Fall. Summer brings lots of happy bright colors with greens. And Winter...well, snowy trees and branches.

What do you do for your decor during those odd dreary months of January and February?

It's still so crazy to me that fall is already here and pumpkins are adorning my house. Even crazier, that in about 2 weeks, this room is going to have Christmas decor. I am so not ready for that! Seriously though, where has this year gone?! I still feel like its May! haha :)

Well, I wasn't going to share this room this year for my fall decor since not a lot was added, but I love looking back at my rooms every year and how they were decorated for each season. I also figured it would offer a little more inspiration if you are need of it! Plus, I have big changes coming in here so this will probably be the last glimpse of it with how it is now. My plans? Full length board and batten over all the walls.

I'm still trying to decide if I should keep this back planked wall or if it will look weird with the board and batten. So, it will probably be a 2 part process. I'll see what it looks like, and if I hate it, I'll rip those down and add the board and batten.

As for the decor this year for fall, I went the pink and green route. I used this color combo in my main living room last year and just loved it. So, I decided to move it in here for this year.

Having a neutral color base makes it so easy to add new color combos in here. To add the accents, I brought in the pink with pillows, flowers, and throw blankets. The greens show up with the faux greenery and a few small velvet pumpkins.

I accented the mantel just a little with two small pumpkins. I usually add a lot more, but thought less is more in this case. My go -to accent pieces for mantel decor are books, corbels, and candlesticks. I like to add some sort of garland or sprigs to finish it off.

This mantel was an antique piece I found last year. I added the book pages to it to bring more interest and texture.

This is the wall that I'm worried about with the board and batten. I'm not sure how it's going to look. I love how the white frames pop off the beige wall. I guess we will see! I'm sure I'll love it even more especially when I put up the Christmas tree! ....still not ready for that though :)

That sums up the tour! Are you all ready to start decorating for Christmas? Anyone else in the same boat thinking it should still be May? ha!
