It's been one of those years that it's super hard to get into summer. I really want it so bad, but the weather is totally not cooperating. Because of that, I'm totally feeling like it's still April. I'm going to feel gypped out of a summer come fall. All my outdoor projects have been on hold because of the crazy rain and winds these past few months. One would think that would make me play around with the stuff inside my house more, but nope! Ha! Totally not. Instead I'm just in rebellion, I guess. I don't know how I am, but I feel like I am :)
I shared with you my summer dining room and entry way over the past two weeks, and today I'll be sharing with you my front living room. I loved the colors and how I decorated my main living room during the spring, so I brought a lot of that over into this room for summer to give it a little refresh. I didn't do big changes, but this just shows that a few small changes can help refresh a space easily. Yes, there are a lot of pillows on this couch! But, it rarely get's used so it totally works. This actually folds out into a bed. It's the perfect piece of furniture for a multi-use room.
I brought in the pops of pink with the pillows and this throw blanket. Yes, blankets are essential in my house during the summer. They are used over and over again. I like it hot, my husband likes it cold. So, yeah, I get the short end of the stick on that one apparently :) Along with the pinks, I brought in lots of faux greenery. I'm all about multi-functional furniture in this room. This bench works perfect to conceal toys, yet is a completely functional coffee table.
Years and years ago, I was so hyper focused on not adding pictures into my decor because it didn't match or it would throw things off. I got over that quickly when I had kids. I had so many photos that I didn't want to just be forgotten on a phone or sd card. So, I decided to create a gallery wall for each kid. I told myself I would go through them and update them as time goes by, but I haven't done that much....and I don't really mind. I love looking at their sweet baby faces :) I changed up this mantel quite a bit from spring, made it a little cleaner. Truthfully, it felt so weird looking in this room without all the stuff on the mantel and wall :) You can see the spring mantel here if you don't know what I'm talking about.That's it for my front room! Our entry way is obviously the first thing people see when they come into our house. It's also one of the areas that gets updated most often. I don't mean to, but I noticed I tend to change out the pillows and even the wall decor every other month or so. I have plans to get rid of this bench, and make a new console table for the space. The bench has been a wonderful piece of storage that hides all my kids shoes. But, it's come to point that those shoes need to be sorted and stored a little differently. It's like 5 minutes of pure craziness when it comes time to find shoes...you can always find one, but hardly the other in this depth of shoe chaos.
Until I get the time to make that console table, I'll just keep sharing my entry as is :) I, of course, changed it up for summer. Actually, changed it up so much that the only things that stayed were the actual bench and the fiddle leaf fig. I tried to keep it simple by only using two pillows this season. I tend to go overboard on this little bench. Nobody actually uses it to sit on (even though that was my full intention). So, why not go overboard, right?
I think I might have a small obsession with faux cathedral windows. I made the brown one last year and have fallen in love with the look ever since. So, of course, when I went in to Hobby Lobby the other day and found these other two for $12 each, I grabbed them. I wasn't sure where to put them at first, but then decided to play musical chairs with them on this wall. I ended up loving this layered look.
Another big switch, at least for me, was moving my blanket basket out of here. There has been some sort of basket on the left side of this bench since day one. I wanted to add more height to this side to balance out the window frames. Adding this wood ladder from DecorSteals did the trick! I didn't realize how much it would open up this narrow hall by moving the basket out. I bought this ladder last year and have struggle with where to place it. I think it found a new home :) Here's a little decorating secret. I love blankets...obviously. Some are pricey, and when you want some just for looks it's okay to go cheap :) I have found some of my favorite 'blankets' on Amazon. They aren't blankets though, they are turkish towels. They are about the same size of a throw blanket, weigh a little less, and are cheaper! Plus, they have so many amazing looks. You can find a slew of them here.
Another small, but big update was changing out the rug. The rug I had in here was perfect and fit every season and every change in decor. But, I wanted to see a little change so I swapped it out for this little jute rug. Jute is my favorite type of rug, this is like my 10th one over the years. They hold up great and hide dirt! They are the best :)
I had a love/hate relationship with my entryway for years. I hated the knotty alder railing. I hated the tile diamond flooring. I hated the the big beige walls. I always loved the two story space though and knew it could be something so much better. Just a few years of updates, changed a lot of things! New flooring, molding and paint was all that was needed! Trying to still talk my husband into letting me rip up this carpet and paint the stairs all white. I think that would help this space be that much more amazing.

It's finally feeling like summer around here! We have had 3 full days of sun with no rain or snow. I count that as a win! If you follow me on social media, you'll know that we have had a super rough spring...technically it's still spring, but usually we are watering our grass beginning to mid May. It's mid-June and still haven't turned on our sprinklers. This weather is perfect since today I'll be sharing my dining room with you all for Marty's from A Stroll Thru Life's summer tour! This year all around my home I have included lots and lots of terracotta. I found an easy technique to faux age the pots and kind of got carried away :) So, I have them all over....and the dining room was no exception.
The only thing that changes seasonal in my dining room is what goes on my table, like place settings and the tablescape. I tend to change up the pillows on the head of the table along with the draped blanket. Why do I need pillows and a blanket in here? I don't :) I just love the look and it makes it so inviting. For the tablescape, I used a variety of terracotta pots. You can see how I aged them here (tutorial). I placed them in this vintage wood crate, added some height with other pots and a planter stool.
For the places settings, I kept it really simple. I found these amazing new chargers from Kirklands to change things up from my normal rattan ones.I put a simple sprig from my boxwood on each plate, just to add enough of a pop of color. I added a little greenery and hug some more boxwood sprigs to my cup rack. This isn't an angle I show to much and I don't know why ...I guess it's the fact I have to go knee deep in my kids toys to get this angle :)
For my buffet, this stays the same for the most part besides slight changes.
I just did a tutorial on how to make your very own vintage style cutting board last week. I have a slight obsession with them...both handmade or store bought. You can probably tell if you look around all these pictures :) I played around with changing up my lavender gallery wall but ultimately came back to them. I think they are timeless and I couldn't find anything better. You can see the tutorial on how to make them here (tutorial). Also, this shiplap/planked wall was one of the first projects I did in my house about 10 years ago, and is still my favorite! It brings so much character into the space. You guys! This weather has me all sorts of annoyed. We have had like 3 days of sunshine in the past 3 months. The storms just keep rolling in and ruining my plans for my patio. I have all the stuff to redo it, took my old table apart (sadly), have mostly everything prepped...and yet it sits like an empty square with no love. haha. Anyway. Hopefully I'll be able to share something in the next week. Fingers crossed!
Until then, I have been meaning to share with the tutorial on how to make your very own vintage style cutting board...for practically free. Well, at least for me. I have a slew of unused scrap wood just waiting to be used on projects like this.
Here's how I did it...trust me, it's so easy and only uses one basic power tool (besides your drill) :)
Grab a 1x12 piece of wood and roughly sketch the top of what you want your cutting board to look like. Try to make it symmetrical. If you aren't good at sketching and have a cutting board you already love, us that and trace over it adjusting your lines as you need. Using a jigsaw, cut along the lines. And yes, this is when mine resembled a pumpkin. Don't worry, I make sure to remember it every time I look at it. haha. The board is gong to be pretty rough, so go through and sand the edges. Since this is for pure decoration and not food-grade, I stained mine with Minwax Dark Walnut. I then placed a piece of painters tape about 2 inches down from the handle and painted the top portion with a white craft paint. I drilled a hole in the middle and strung a little piece of jute. Done! Seriously like a 15 minute project.
I have a slight obsession with cutting boards that I have had to cure. I have no place to put anymore no matter how much I want to stuff another one somewhere. I think I am reaching hoarder status over here with some of my stuff. No but for reals...you should see my basement :/ Or no...probably not, I wouldn't let you :)
I just love the instant farmhouse and vintage charm cutting boards add to a dining room or kitchen. You can easily add some fun vintage designs on them too, or a little mending plate for charm. These one's I actually bought, but you can easily duplicate the look on your own now that you know how to make one! :)
