I'm going to get real here for a minute, and I know I can't be the only one. Every time I get on social media or talk to someone it seems like they are bored to tears with this social distancing and quarantining thing with nothing to do. Or, now they finally have all the time in the world to get things done. I wish this were me! This quarantining thing has flipped my world on it's end and I'm just scrambling to get back afloat. I'm seriously drowning over here! ha! I'm the busiest I have ever been. Every free minute I have away from my normal work is now sucked up with homeschooling. This whole thing is completely new to me and I applaud all of you guys that have it figured out or figured it out long ago! This momma is not meant to be a teacher...I knew that the summer my oldest turned 3 when I tried to start teaching her from those preschool books you can buy at the store. My patience lasted about 5 minutes. This has given me so much more appreciation for teachers! If you are one of them, thank you thank you thank you! :)  Until then...I had all these hopes of "quarantine" projects happening. Let's just say I'm not sure they are going to happen ;) I'm going to see how this weekend goes and see if I can find some spare time to whip something up! I have ideas running through my head like crazy, just no time to do them. One of those ideas is something big in my front living room.

Yep. My plan is to paint the beige walls and ceiling white, and then add board and batten from floor to ceiling. I'm going to keep the planking/shiplap on the back wall and see how that ends up looking. I'm thinking it'll be okay, but you never know until you try!

On that back shiplapped wall is my faux fireplace and mantel. I got this mantel for a steal on the local classifieds a little over a year ago. It has been my top fave find of all time. I love the character it brings to the space. I decorated it with some books and corbels. I added a little spring green to it with garland I found at Hobby Lobby. The center is a clock I found from Home Goods. As for the wall, isn't that wreath beautiful? It's the new spring wreath from DecorSteals.

A lot of people think that having a neutral house means having no color. I disagree completely. Having a neutral house helps the color you add pop even more. It's purposeful color. I love using greens in my decor year around because of how it pops. Plus, I guess if we are being honest, green is pretty much a neutral anyway. It goes with everything! Also, having that neutral and white backdrop helps bring attention to the wood tones in a space. If this beautiful mantel was against a red wall, it would get completely lost. But, against a white wall, it becomes the focal point and you can see all the fine details.

For tighter spaces like in this room, I like using skinnier pieces like this bench for the coffee table. Plus, it's multipurpose and offers tons of storage. For us, it houses a whole bunch of play kitchen items for my kids.

On top of the bench, I have my dough bowl I also got from DecorSteals. This thing is beautiful and massive. I went simple with it this spring, and added some sprigs of lavender in an old galvanized bucket then flanked the sides with greenery. These stems on the sides are actually from the faux potted plants from Ikea; I just took off the base. They work perfect like that! I added some little wicker balls next to them to fill in some space.

On the table by the couch, I tied the space together with some more lavender, and this beautiful flowing vine plant (what else would you call that? ha!). If you have followed me for awhile, you may have guessed where these two are from. Ikea. Seriously. They have the best faux plants! To complete this vignette, I added candlesticks and some books along with a white beaded garland.

While taking these photos, I ended up having both of my pets come in here. I love watching this pup watching outside. He literally stays there all day on the look out for those pesky delivery drivers...which let's be honest, happens like 2-3 times a day :)

Our new little bunny, Oreo, was actually in here in the whole time I was shooting these photos. I'm actually pretty surprised his little butt didn't end up in any of the shots. He's been a super fun addition to our family....especially now for my littles since they are home all day. They get one little extra 'friend' to play with.

This room has been my sanctuary this past week. It's usually the last place to get trashed, but I make it the first place to get cleaned up too. I've started working in here to get away from the chaos that is life :) I'm hoping to show you a new and improved room in the coming weeks with the board and batten up on the adjacent walls. What do you think? Think it'll look okay with the shiplap? I might just end up doing the whole room in board and batten if it doesn't. Eeeek! Kind of nervous, kind of excited.

How are you all doing with this quarantine? They are a few days away from shutting down our whole city. Doesn't matter too much to me at this point anyway since I haven't been anywhere for about 2 weeks trying to keep the social distancing in check. Having two autoimmune diseases kind of makes me freak out just a little bit. I'm not sure how my body will handle it if I do get sick. Better be safe than sorry! Keep safe and healthy you guys!

Welcome to your time of retreat! I don't know about you all, but at day 2 of social distancing with school out on dismissal and everyone working from home, my anxiety has hit the roof! ha! Keeping my home clean has sadly been way hard with my little tornadoes going through it. I am super thankful though that I have a full time job that I'm able to do from home to help during this chaotic time, along with my outlet here. That being said, for many of us, this is going to be a time of creativity! Trying to be creative in all ways of life, either with finances, food, keeping children busy, and helping you survive by tuning into your creative outlet! I hope that this post, along with the other tours this week, will bring you inspiration and ideas to keep your mind busy and your creativity flowing!

Proof of my chaos:
Yep. That picture was taken about 10 minutes after I finished taking these pictures for this tour :) At least they are having fun!

Let's get back to this other reality that only lasts one minute :) ....Today, I'm sharing my spring living room tour along with many other talented bloggers tours going on this week! These tours are hosted by the amazing Marty from A Stroll Thru Life. If you are joining along the tour hop, welcome from Modern Glam. Isn't Ashley's home just so beautiful and inviting? If you want some serious inspiration, her home has it!

As for my living room, here's one of the first views you get when walking in. I love using whites and neutrals against different types of wood. As you can tell, I'm all about mixing wood. At one time, black didn't match with brown and brass didn't match with nickle. But now they do! I seriously think, that's all in the past and it's okay to get creative with those things now! Same with wood :)
 Chair: Link         Lamp: Link
I try to keep this room light and airy so the wood tones pop. Plus, a bright light home for me just calms me and lifts my spirit. I added pops of greenery throughout this space to mark the beginnings of spring.

My builtin shelves stay the same the majority of the year, but I do change out the faux greens in the pots. For spring, I used lavender I found at Ikea.
Shiplap: Tutorial     Media Console: Tutorial      Builtin shelves: Tutorial
The shelves on the other side house a plethora of firewood. I love the character this brings to the space. I have actually got a lot of concerns and questions about having this amount of wood in my house...mainly about bugs. I haven't seen any bugs come from these. I was super worried about it also when I was putting them up. I actually left the majority of the wood unbundled in my basement for a good week or two before bringing them upstairs. If there was a crazy looking piece that looked like something was living in it, I tossed it. All of that being said, I think it's about time to switch these logs to books! I just have to find enough books to fill this thing up :) I guess I'll be having a massive bonfire when that time comes!

The centerpiece to my spring mantel is this amazing repurposed wood world map from DecorSteals. This thing is big and sure makes a statement! I then added vintage-y little items to fill up the mantel shelf. In the middle, I have vintage books held together by some corbels also from DecorSteals. I then flanked that with these beautiful vintage looking terracotta pots I found at Michaels. I swagged a macrame tassel piece along the birch wood to give it a little boho vibe. I finished it up with some swagged greenery.

As for my coffee table and couch, I kept it neutral. Ever since I bought this rug, I've been adding color so I couldn't wait to go back to my roots and just do whites and creams with the pillows.
I moved this cabinet behind the couch last year, and it's one of the best decisions I have made in a while....mainly because it has given me another place to decorate :) And of course, it offers loads of toy storage. Yep, my kids play area is all behind this couch and you wouldn't even notice!

This apothecary cabinet is still one of my favorite finds. I use it somewhat as a side table for the couch. The couch's arm is actually really high so a normal sized side table is too small. This cabinet offers a ton of character and storage too! It was a Hobby Lobby find I repainted.
I have a few things that go on most of my tabletops in my house which are faux greenery, books, clocks, and candlesticks. I feel like you can never really go wrong with that mixture. I have learned the past year that swagging garland adds that extra layer that sometimes completes an area!

Here are a couple wider views of this space. I have a feeling it won't be looking like this for many many days to come!

I was provided product by DecoArt and compensated to write about this project, but all thoughts, opinions, and ideas are my own :)

Although we just had some snow, spring weather is in the forecast and I'm totally feeling it! I've taken out all the winter decor in my house, added spring decor, and now hoping that I didn't just jinx myself, ha!

Today, I'm going to be sharing how I made this cute Flower Market tray that totally resembles the look of terracotta....down to the texture!

To get this awesome textured look, I used DecoArt's newest product Suede. It's a lightly textured acrylic paint that resembles the look of suede, cool huh? The color I chose that happens to be a pretty darn close match to terracotta is also called "Suede".
DecoArt Suede Lightly Textured Acrylic paint in the color Suede
To start, I bought a cabinet door from ReStore for a dollar. Serious. And this thing is loooong!

I cleaned it off first, and then gave it a light sanding.

I initially was going to paint this whole thing with the Suede, but decided I wanted to add a little extra character. Luckily, the Suede wiped up pretty good, and I was able to do a bottom coat of white using DecoArt Americana acrylic paint in White Wash.

When the White Wash was completely cured and dried, I placed a vinyl cutout on the middle of the "door". I found this on the Silhouette Design Store; just search for "Flower Market".

I then started brushing on the Suede. I used a cross-hatch technique, which resembles the picture below. My daughter says it's like using lots of X's and O's.... more so X's. :)
DIY spring dining table decor. DIY spring centerpiece. DIY spring tablescape. DIY faux terracotta tray. DecoArt Suede acrylic paint. DIY repurposed tray. How to make a tray out of a cabinet door. Flower Market design. Spring dining room decor.
I did this over the entire piece, making sure to get in all the cracks.

Because of this technique, it's important to do a second coat to get the coverage you need to see the "suede" type texture. The top of the picture below is just one coat, and the bottom is two. Quite the difference!

Let this dry for a few hours, if not overnight.

Next was the fun part :) Tedious part. Put on a good show while you do this! ha! I peeled off all the vinyl using some pretty darn pointy tweezers. If you don't have any on hand, you can totally use some toothpicks.

Learn from my mistakes, and make sure when you place your vinyl, that all pieces are still on there. I was missing some shadowing on a couple of letters and a petal or two. I ended up having to touch those up with the White Birch later.

To finish it up, I drilled some holes and placed a handle at both ends.

Once I was done, I was so excited to see how closely the color and texture resembled terracotta. If you know me, you know I loooove me some terracotta. Also, I'm so glad that I decided to switch gears mid-project and add the "Flower Market". It totally made this piece pop.

And of course, since it looks like terracotta, why not add some to the top for a beautiful spring centerpiece?

For the white faux aged terracotta pots, I wrote up a tutorial on how to make them here. I just love these and love them even more now popping off this tray.

This spring dining table centerpiece is actually at my mom's house. I knew her white table would make it pop! I am totally transferring it to my house when I find a cute white table runner to pair with it.
